Chinese New Year Dublin

February 1st, 2008

In an effort to offer a wider variety of articles on the mountain. This year we will be covering the Chinese Spring Festival celebrations or as you’d probably more commonly know it, Chinese New Year.

The Chinese New Year or the Lunar New Year is the most important of all traditional Chinese holidays and this year the world is inaugurating the 4706th year of the Chinese calendar, which also marks the start of a fresh twelve year cycle commencing with the Rat.

From it’s first noticeable roots in Dublin back in the 1950s, the Chinese community has grown from strength to strength and I have to say, as a citizen of the city, I’m extremely pleased that the powers that be are finally moving toward multiculturalism and putting more focus on other cultural festivals. Rather than just Irish-Day (St.Patrick’s day.)

This is just a brief piece for now and it will be expanded over the coming eleven days and joined by more reviews on the celebrations.
